About the Author:
Reverend Wilbert Awdry, born in Hampshire in 1911, created the tales of the Thomas the Tank engines. Growing up near the railway, he firmly believed that steam engines had distinct personalities, often imagining conversations between them. As an adult, when his son Christopher fell ill with measles, Awdry began crafting stories about Thomas the Tank Engine and friends to entertain him. The popularity of the Railway Series books soared after the first publication in 1945, with Awdry writing a total of 26 Railway books before his son took over the series. The legacy continued with numerous highly acclaimed Thomas the Tank Engine TV series and films.
